Maplewood Wood Duck House
Broadcasting live now. The top of the frame shows the steps the ducklings will use to leave the nest. Nesting material is in the rest of the frame. I now have a new camera (and capture card) to fix the problems from last year, seems much better. (See below for still pictures and more info.)

4/24/12: Still Hooded Mergansers and Wood Duck pairs around in the pond. In the last few days nesting has been rearranged by a visiting duck, though I have not seen it inside yet. No eggs so far. 4/1/12: Broadcasting live. A very early spring here, Hooded Mergansers and Wood Ducks have been in the pond nearby (especially in the mornings). At least one duck has been inside the box as the nesting material has been rearranged.
1/17/12: New camera was installed in the summer and now reconnected, ready for the spring.
2011 info:
5/20: Lost all of the eggs to a raccoon intrusion.
5/15: There are at least 11 eggs in the nest. Battles with other hens are over. She has been setting since May 2 or 3. She covers them up when gone (except it seems at night, more than once she has been gone after 9 pm and left the eggs uncovered for more than an hour). As of 5/5/2011 we believe the hen has been setting almost full time since 5/2 or 5/3. There were some nasty battles between other Wood Duck hens and a Hooded Merganser hen over the nest box! We know there are at least 11 eggs in the nest from when she left it uncovered (seems to happen when she leaves at night). We are pretty sure that more than one hen has laid eggs in the nest box as we have seen a hen in the nest at the same time as there is one on top of the house (looking in like the picture below)! Hooded Mergansers are now gone.
At least 10 eggs, view night of May 2:

2010 info: We are streaming live and sometimes the compliation of the footage we captured during incubation, hatching and jump last year! Loop is about 35 minutes long. Only the later sections have sound. Footage from both inside and outside the nest box. ---------------
Jump day was May 25. 2010. 11 chicks made the jump and swam off with Mom! Hatch day was Mon. May 24. She seems to leave the nest two or three times a day for 30 to 60 minutes at a time (around 6 am, Noon?, and 5:30 pm). When she leaves she covers the eggs up with feathers so you will not see them. If you watch long enough you will see her turn her body slightly around and rotate a few eggs. Enjoy.
